�Ŀ�� Faculty to Host SQL Bootcamp for Aspiring Data Scientists

Data science and analytics continues to be a growing field, but acquiring the specific skills required to thrive in the field can seem daunting.

It doesn’t have to be. On Aug. 5, faculty from �Ŀ��’s College of Business Influence and Information Analysis will host a one-day SQL Bootcamp on campus, giving those looking to bolster skills in business intelligence tools a boost in their career goals and pave the path toward a degree in the field.

“The bootcamp is designed for beginners to SQL through all stages of their career,” said Emily Dale, clinical assistant professor and director of analytics programs at Rockhurst. “Whether you’re an aspiring data professional or the leader of a data team, SQL is a powerful tool that will allow you to better understand your data and how to effectively solve problems.”

SQL stands for Structured Query Language, a protocol that allows users to perform transformation and analysis of large datasets easily. Understanding the tools available with SQL is the starting point for aggregating, analyzing, visualizing and presenting complex data for use in decision making.

For those who have had interest in the past in data analytics, there are some really good reasons to begin training now. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the number of data analytics jobs will grow by 35% by 2031. And according to Robert Half Technology’s 2022 Salary Report, candidates in those fields can expect to earn an average salary of between $87,500 and $126,250.

The daylong bootcamp on campus, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will have participants learning fundamental SQL skills as well as how and when to employ SQL to solve a range of business or organizational challenges. And it’s all taught by highly skilled faculty from Rockhurst’s data analytics program, which has earned national recognition.

Dale said the knowledge participants gain during the sessions can either help them in their career immediately — all will receive a LinkedIn badge to display upon completion of the course — or serve as a foundation for more specialized training.

“Understanding SQL and databases opens up some amazing opportunities!” Dale said. “Participants will also be better prepared for further education in data and analytics, including Rockhurst’s Master of Science in Data Analytics and its suite of analytics certificates.”
